Interests

A random mix of things I spend far too much time thinking about, building, collecting, watching, listening to or tinkering with.

Web design and the open web

I’ve been building websites since college and still enjoy the process just as much now as I did then. I’m particularly interested in lightweight, content-first websites, design systems, accessibility and the IndieWeb movement.

I prefer simple websites that load quickly, work well and feel personal over heavily polished platforms filled with tracking and unnecessary complexity.

Things I enjoy:

  • Eleventy
  • Design systems
  • Frontend development
  • Accessibility
  • Personal websites
  • Static sites
  • UI design
  • Web performance

Logs, collections and personal data

I like keeping track of things like music, films, TV shows, games, concerts and books, as well as links — if I spend enough time on something, there’s a good chance I’ve tried building a way to track or log it.

A lot of this site exists because I enjoy creating small systems around personal data and turning it into something visual or useful.

Current collections and logs include:

  • Films and TV watched
  • Concerts attended
  • Music listening stats
  • LEGO
  • Games
  • Funko Pops
  • Articles read
  • Books read

Music

Music is probably the thing I consume the most. My taste is all over the place but generally leans towards punk, hip-hop, alternative rock, drum & bass and anything nostalgic from growing up in the '90s and 2000s.

I still enjoy discovering new music, but I probably spend just as much time revisiting albums and artists I grew up listening to.

Films and television

I watch a lot of films and TV, especially horror, sci-fi, documentaries and comfort rewatches.

Some recurring favourites:

  • The Office
  • Seinfeld
  • Marvel
  • Horror films
  • Comedy series
  • Documentaries

Smart home and tech

Outside of web work, I’m interested in smart home technology, networking and home automation.

I enjoy figuring out ways to make technology feel simpler and more useful rather than more complicated.

This interest eventually turned into building iConnectHQ.

DIY and making things

I enjoy practical projects and making things with my hands just as much as building things digitally.

This usually includes:

  • Woodworking
  • DIY projects
  • Home improvements
  • Garden projects

Walking and getting outside

I spend far too much time at a desk, so I try to balance it with walking, road trips and generally getting outdoors when I can.

Coastal walks, random drives and exploring new places are usually more appealing to me than sitting still.

Occasionally I also get out on my mountain bike for a cross-country or forest ride... and even less occasionally I'll play some basketball.

Currently interested in

Right now I’m particularly interested in:

  • Building more personal web projects
  • Improving this site
  • IndieWeb ideas
  • RSS and social publishing
  • Smart home setups
  • Better personal systems and tracking
  • Static-first web development
  • Simplifying technology

This page will probably keep changing as new interests appear, old hobbies return and I inevitably start another project.
